This trail takes you on a journey through the picturesque Tamar Valley, where rolling hills are adorned with endless rows of vines and framed by sweeping mountain views. This blog celebrates the charm of countryside driving, exploring a range of exceptional wineries nestled in this breathtaking region. With every turn of the road, you’ll discover stunning landscapes, tranquil vineyards, and a sense of serenity that makes the Tamar Valley a true gem for wine lovers and scenic explorers alike. We highlight three of the venues in our trail today with the other venues available on the Gourmakers app.

Clover Hill Wines

Clover Hill Wines, established in 1986 on a former dairy farm in north-east Tasmania, is one of the region’s premier sparkling wine producers. Dedicated to crafting sparkling wines that rival those of Champagne, Clover Hill uses only traditional methods, earning a reputation for exceptional quality, elegance, and finesse. The vineyard specializes in the “classical trinity” of sparkling varieties and has received numerous accolades from its inaugural vintage to the present day.

Located in the renowned Pipers River region, Clover Hill benefits from Tasmania’s ideal cool-climate conditions, which are perfect for producing sparkling wines of outstanding quality. The winery captures the region’s natural beauty and balance, reflected in its meticulously crafted wines that embody the elegance of Tasmania’s premier sparkling wine house.

Luckily, there’s an innate boldness to the way we do things in our part of the world.

The combination of creativity, complexity, and courage — bending the rule book until it breaks — is at the heart of what we create here.

Russell & Suitor

Russell & Suitor is led by expert winemaker Alex Russell, who has spent the last decade elevating Australian winemaking. Drawing on extensive local and international experience, Alex has crafted a diverse portfolio of premium alternative varietals and mainland wines, earning a reputation for innovation and quality.

Recently, Alex has turned his focus to Tasmania’s renowned Piper’s River region, celebrated for producing some of the finest cool-climate wines in the world. Utilizing the area’s pristine environment, Alex applies his meticulous production process to create exceptional wines with integrity and precision, offering outstanding value in the premium wine market.

Lalla Colline

Lalla Colline is a winery born from the revival of an abandoned farm surrounded by regrowth trees and historic remnants, such as the old Lalla post office and Presbyterian church. Among the ruins, a single grapevine inspired a journey of restoration and winemaking. The process of creating the winery is likened to crafting a wine barrel, combining the gifts of nature, such as the rich Permian soil, with deliberate choices like grape clones and trellis systems. The result is a collection of handcrafted, high-quality wines shaped by the seasons, hard work, and a deep connection to the land.

The winery’s history is intertwined with the area’s heritage, as reflected in the discovery of an Aboriginal silicate stone tool during soil sampling. This find underscores the significance of the land’s original custodians, whom the winery respectfully acknowledges. Lalla Colline’s story is one of resilience, collaboration, and a commitment to honouring both the natural environment and the cultural history that enriches its wines.
