South West Tamar River Drive & Discover

Our Road Trip

The Tamar River / Kanamaluka is the defining feature of the Tamar Valley, with its winding path providing the perfect background to admire the birds flying across the waterway and the beautiful warm sight of the sun rising above the river. The South West region of the Tamar Valley captures the river in it’s best perspective, with rolling hinds beyond the river to the east and the beautiful lush greenery of vines on along the western bank. There are few places like it in Australia.

We start our journey at the latest vineyard to open in the Tamar Valley – Evenfall Wines, located a quick 15 minute drive from the Launceston, Evenfall provides an absolutely incredible view back across the Tamar River. Serving an incredible selection of shared platters with the option of some might tasty wood-fired options. Evenfall provides the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir whilst sampling some truly incredible Tasmanian produce.

The Tamar draws in cooler air from across the oceans, and gently dispenses it over its banks, relieving the accumulated warmth of the day. It is these welcome, cooling drafts that give our wines their signature elegance

Evenfall Wines

Travelling further up the river we come across Brady’s Lookout Cider which marks itself as Australia’s only cider maker committed to the time-honoured Methode Traditionelle technique. The farm is home to a very impressive 83 varieties of apples (and they are all delicious!), along with being a full supporter of zero waste including being nominated as one of Tasmania’s Sustainable Businesses of the Year in 2021. We highly recommend sampling some of the great ciders they have available, including some mixed options including the premium rose cider.

Our final stop on this driving trip is one truly worthy of savouring. Marion’s Vineyard was the very first cellar door opening in Tasmania, back in 1983, and the vineyard continues to be run by the same family which is very special. Beyond the historic nature of Marion’s is one of the most spectacular views of any vineyard in Australia – truly breathtaking. Along with the typical favourites of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the vineyard produces stronger reds such as Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Marion’s also has a strong focus in sustainability with Organic and Biodynamic certification with the hope of preserving this beautiful vineyard and region for future generations.
